Discover the Health of Your Oil Glands with LipiScan

January 14, 2026

Do you know what your meibomian glands look like today?

Are they healthy, functioning well or quietly becoming damaged without you knowing?

At Eye Doctor MD, we have the ability to see what’s happening inside your eyelids with a quick test called LipiScan. This advanced imaging allows us to check whether your meibomian glands are healthy, clogged, or showing signs of damage and helps us decide if treatments like IPL or OptiPlus could help protect and rejuvenate them.

Why Do Meibomian Glands Matter?

Meibomian glands line your eyelids and produce the oil layer of your tears. This oil keeps tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become blocked—a condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)—it can lead to dry, irritated, burning, or blurry eyes.

If a gland stays clogged for too long, it can slowly shrink and stop working altogether. Once a gland is severely damaged, it cannot be brought back—making early detection incredibly important.

If you have had a chalazion or a stye, then you have MGD whether you know it or not. Other causes of MGD include rosacea and demodex blepharitis.

Nutritional Supplements

Basic support for your Meibomian glands include taking omega-3s by mouth, approximately 1000 mg of a triglyceride-form of omega-3s (it should say this on the bottle) or in a dietary form like salmon or walnuts/flax seeds, etc. This is also the amount of omega-3s recommended for daily intake by the American Heart Association for your heart health.

Some good brands include PRN, Nordic Naturals, Oasis, etc. You can learn more about the PRN brand here. Another great company with pure high grade omega-3s is Nordic Naturals (Our affiliate practitioner ID 165623).

What Is LipiScan?

LipiScan uses gentle near-infrared light to take high-definition images of your meibomian glands in about one minute. It’s non-invasive, painless, and fits easily into your dry eye evaluation.

With LipiScan, we can:

  • See how many glands you still have
  • Identify early damage before symptoms worsen
  • Determine whether treatment can help prevent progression

In the past, we couldn’t easily visualize these glands, and treatment was limited to warm compresses. While helpful, heat alone often isn’t enough to open stubborn blockages.

Today, newer technologies combine controlled heat and therapeutic force to improve gland function more effectively.

Advanced Treatments to Help Protect Your Glands

If LipiScan shows gland blockage or early damage, treatments such as IPL, OptiLift, and OptiPlus may help:

  • Unclog glands and improve oil flow
  • Support the glands that are still functioning
  • Reduce inflammation and slow further damage
  • Improve comfort, vision, and tear quality

Seeing your meibomian glands can change everything.
