BlephEx Treatment for Blepharitis & the NuVissa Plasma Pen for Meibomitis

At Eye Doctor MD, P.C., we are committed to providing the quality eye care you deserve so you can maintain healthy vision for years to come. From our Glen Allen office, Dr. Pradhan offers effective treatments for a wide range of eye conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic eye disease, and dry eye–related conditions. For patients experiencing blepharitis and meibomitis, we offer BlephEx treatment to help clean the eyelids and provide meaningful relief. The NuVissa Plasma Pen helps the meibomian glands flow oil better and is ideal for patients who are not a candidate for Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment.

What Is Blepharitis & Meibomitis?
Blepharitis is crusting of the eyelashes, often caused by mild skin bacteria or Demodex mites. The meibomian glands—located behind the eyelashes—produce the oil layer of your tear film. When these glands become clogged with debris or bacteria, they do not release enough oil, causing tears to evaporate faster and leading to dryness and irritation. Keeping both the lashes and glands clean is essential for eye comfort and proper tear function.

Common Symptoms

  • Swollen or irritated eyelids
  • Itching or redness around the eyes
  • Crusted or flaky eyelashes
  • Greasy-appearing eyelids
  • Symptoms that are often worse in the morning

Simple Eyelid Hygiene Tips

  • Remove eye makeup nightly with a gentle remover
  • Use warm compresses for about 10 minutes if eyelids feel itchy or irritated (remember it would be cold compresses if it is due to allergies)
  • Maintain consistent eyelid hygiene to prevent buildup and gland blockage

In-Office Treatment Options
BlephEx is an in-office cleaning and debridement procedure that removes debris and bacteria from the eyelid margins, helping restore healthier gland function. Depending on your needs, additional treatments may be recommended, including specialty cleansers, demodex-targeted products/medications like Xdemvy, or meibomian gland imaging and treatment.

The NuVissa Plasma Pen has two attachments, one used for conjunctival chalasis (or wrinkles on your conjunctiva making it feel like something is in your eye) and skin wrinkles (aesthetic treatment) and the one attachment for MGD with a rounded tip that applies vibrational/plasma/electrical/heat energy to open up the oil glands and help them flow better. This latter option is the one you need for meibomitis. Check out our YouTube video of how it works and helps the oil flow better with manual expression afterwards. You may need two treatments about six weeks apart for your benefit. Some cautions with the treatment are having metal in your eyes like an iStent for glaucoma or around your eyes.

Both the BlephEx and the NuVissa Plasma Pen MGD treatment are NOT covered by insurance.
