Understanding Dry Eye: How We Find the Root Cause

May 6, 2026

If your eyes feel gritty, tired, or irritated, you aren’t alone. However, effective relief starts with an accurate diagnosis. Because dry eye syndrome can have different causes, Dr. Pradhan uses a variety of comprehensive diagnostic tests to determine the best treatment path for you.

How is Dry Eye Diagnosed?

A complete eye exam is the first step. By looking at your overall health history and your eye health, we can pinpoint why your eyes aren’t staying hydrated.

Our Objective Diagnostic Methods:

  • Schirmer’s basal tear production: The Schirmer test evaluates your overall tear output by measuring both your basal and reflex tears.
  • Tear Break-Up Time (TBUT): This measures the quality of your tears by tracking how long it takes for them to evaporate.
  • Corneal Staining: Using special dyes during a slit lamp exam, we can see the actual surface condition of your eyes and identify any dry spots.
  • Lipiscan: A specialized scan used to check for Meibomian Gland Disease, which affects the oil production in your tears.
  • Omega-3 Index: A test by Omega Quant to check your levels of essential fatty acids.
  • Lab Testing: In some cases, we work with rheumatologists to check for markers like Vitamin A deficiency or Sjogren’s syndrome to see if an underlying condition is the culprit.

Simple Steps You Can Take Today

While diagnostic testing is essential, you can support your eye comfort right now with these simple habits:

  1. Environmental Monitoring: Avoid pointing car vents directly at your face.
  2. The 20-Minute Rule: Give your eyes a break every 20–30 minutes during concentrated tasks like reading or computer use and look at something about 20 feet away..
  3. Basic Care: Always remove your makeup before sleep to prevent irritation. Stop electronic devices use about 30 minutes prior to sleep to help your brain wind down for proper sleep with good eyelid closure.
  4. Supportive Care: Use supplemental tear drops (as needed with a max of 4x per day) and consider oral omega-3s (like fish oil/olive oil/walnuts/etc) to help maintain tear quality.

A lot of the time, simple steps is all you need. If it is not enough, come in and see us for an evaluation.
